Installing Rotopax on Can-am

As Treds mentioned in his "new quad" thread, we did some work on his quad today.

The first order of business was figuring out how to mount the RotoPax mounts for his flat-pack jerry cans. With an Outlander, there's a plastic "hood" that covers fuses and provides access to fluids. With my Outlander and the Kolpin flat packs and mounts, the mounts would interfere with the hood, so Roughcountry and I made an aluminum plate that spanned the rack, and had a cutout for me to access the under-hood stuff. I just don't use the plastic "trunk", and you can't see the hole when the jerry can is mounted.

However, the RotoPax jerry cans have the mounting holes further apart, so we were able to attach the mounts straight to the Outlander rack by drilling two holes on each side. The placement is extremely critical; too far forward and you'll run into the rack mount gusset. Too far back and the bolt head will be flush with the rack edge and you won't be able to turn it. The sweet spot is when the flat pack is positioned about .25" off the raised bar at the back of the rack, but if you're planning on doing this, definitely check clearances. Basically, unless you're in that exact spot, you will not be able to tighten the bolts. We removed the front rack, which made the installation considerably easier, and allowed us to see where the bolt heads would end up.

Treds has the stacker mounts which allow him to mount two flat packs, as well as the locking knob for when he leaves his quad unattended.

He's ready for the Monster Ride now!
